Newcastle United had a £50m bid rejected this morning for Norwegian Jorgen Strand Larsen, a much higher fee than the £30m Wolves acquired the player for just less than 60 days ago. So why are Newcastle prepared to pay almost double?
Jorgen Strand Larsen was bought by Wolves on July 1st of this year after a successful loan spell with the club had come to end a £30m pricetag left both Celta Vigo (Jorgen’s former club) and Wolves walking away from the deal happy.
Strand Larsen scored 14 times for Wolves in the Premier League last season adding another 4 assists for his teammates, this type of output with Wolves loss of attacking talent Matheus Cunha to Manchester United became a need rather than just a want so for Wolves locking down his services was a top priority.
The Norwegian who has played 21 times for his country is a huge part of Wolves bid for survival this season whilst in a strong position in comparison the club have struggled to keep up in the market this season whilst it isn’t over yet it is definitely somewhere Wolves need to catch up.
With Wolves winless from their opening two games they are only adrift of the bottom of the table due to a disastrous start to the season from Graham Potter’s West Ham United.
Newcastle’s move for the player isn’t a surprise and has been talked about for the last week or so however an official bid was only submitted today and rejected by Wolves the club have expressed that their rejection of an almost immediate double in profit is due to how difficult Jorgen would be to replace in the final few days of the market.
Newcastle’s pursuit of a striker is probably the Premier League’s worst kept secret the club were beaten to the signing of Frenchman Huge Ekitike (Who scored on his Premier League debut) by Liverpool and Slovenian Youngster Benjamin Sesko who joined Manchester United.
Their issues continue as their pursuit for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa have come to a standstill even with the player refusing to train and not being named in the opening two fixtures of the Premier League season, Brentford who have suffered personnel blows this summer aswell are standing firm on their valuation of the striker.
Three failed pursuits seemingly lead us here Newcastle are desperate for attacking options with the ongoing Alexander Isak standoff paired with their dismissal of Callum Wilson upon the expiry of his contract the club are really struggling coming into the final week of the window.
This is likely why the bid has been rejected outright and Wolves are prepared to completely drop the negotiations as they have the stronger position even if it was Jorgen’s preference to leave the club, Where Newcastle go from this point is likely unclear but expect a flurry of activity over the coming days for the Magpies
